Kotahi, SPACE Gallery, 14th July - 7th August 2021
The main suite of watercolour paintings in this solo exhibition was a monochromatic exploration into form and iridescent light, running in a similar vein to earlier coffee and ink series collected by Wellington City Art Collection. These new works employed motifs recognisable as Maaori, yet the images also held an unknown, otherworldly quality.
The paintings were a surreal adventure into the abstract world I explored with my brush. Kotahi was an exploration into the internal world of the Artist—a meditation on the otherworldly—with titles like Sound Shell and Not a puppet to the man speaking to themes around relationships and our place in the world.
We also presented a series of ceramic tiles as an introduction to my clay practice. With earthy tones and indigenous shapes, these tiles echoed some of the ideas explored in the works on paper.
