Whānau Mārama gathers sixteen Māori artists and researchers under the nine stars of Matariki to deepen collective understanding of the Māori new year. Presented within the Commercial Bay precinct is an array of practices and perspectives reflecting Indigenous ways of knowing and being. Remembering histories, documenting the present, and re-imagining the future; as a cluster, as a map, together these artists and artworks guide us towards an Indigenous Future.
Facilitated by artist Jade Townsend, Whānau Mārama celebrates the mātauranga of our whetū Matariki. The purpose of the midwinter constellation as a means of reflection, renewal, and navigation are engaged here as a frame for contemporary Māori art practice. Re-connecting us to our genealogies, the environment and the past —these stars help us to identify the cultural and political distances between us, while offering a way to unite.
